Q & A
I know I'm in for a long Wednesday when I look in my pro-am partner's bag and see...
Cycolac woods and a ball retriever. [Cycolac is a material traditionally used in wood clubs and is known for its feel and responsiveness.]
If my wife/girlfriend could choose the vanity plate on my car, it would read...
STBRN
At Thanksgiving dinner, you'd be most thankful for what shot pulled off in 2005?
First tee shot at the Funai Classic, my first competitive shot after surgery.
Forget about the Vardon Trophy or Player of the Year, the PGA Tour awards ceremony would be a whole lot more entertaining if they awarded...
Spender of the Year.
A lot of guys complain about metal spikes, but what I would outlaw would be...
Metal drivers.
My high school PE teacher would describe my athletic ability as...
Deceptively slow... like you're really moving but you aren't getting anywhere.
I'd lay 10:1 odds on my caddie against anyone in the field if the game/contest were...
Hoops or horticulture.
If golf were like other team sports and there was a pre-game speech or a halftime speech, what coach (living or dead) would you choose to deliver that pep talk? Why?
Vince Lombardi. He believed in the fundamentals.
Do you think there should be a standardized golf ball for professionals? If so, do you think that will solve the distance debate? If not, what will solve the distance debate?
No. If you really believe the ball is going too far, make the fairways half as wide and outlaw square grooves.
What is the funniest/quirkiest encounter you have had with a fan?
I was playing a practice round at Pebble Beach with Payne Stewart and a fan thought I was Payne and absolutely would not believe me when I told him I was not. I could not convince him so I ended up signing his hat as Payne. Payne got a big kick out of that.
Which professional golfer would win on Celebrity Jeopardy? Who would end up with a negative dollar amount?
Scott Verplank and Joe Ogilvie would tie for first and the rest of us might be in the red.
Who is one athlete outside the game of golf you admire?
Lance Armstrong.
What type of vehicle were you driving when you won your first professional event? How long after that victory before you upgraded?
1996 Ford F-150. Two years later I bought a Dodge Ram 1500, which I still own. [I celebrated my victory with Bordeaux futures.]
During a tournament, what is your pre-round routine? What is the first club out of the bag during a practice session? Last?
Food, 30 minutes putting and chipping, 20 minutes on the range. First club out is the 9-iron. Last is the sand wedge.
What do you think about a three-way international competition pitting the best from the United States, Europe and the rest of the world?
Too complicated. Keep it the way it is.
