2006 PGA TOUR Highlights
In 177th PGA TOUR start, picked up first career win in home state of Connecticut at the tournament where he made his first TOUR start as an amateur in 1998. First state-born player to win the Buick Championship and 11th first-time winner in 55-year history. The three-stroke victory was the largest there since Brent Geiberger defeated Skip Kendall by three in 1999. Win earned an exemption into the British Open and jumped him to sixth on the U.S. Ryder Cup team points list with seven weeks to go...Earlier in the season, finished in a five-way tie for second at the FBR Open, seven strokes behind winner J.B. Holmes, after holding a four-stroke lead through 36 holes. Third runner-up finish in 163 TOUR starts. The 36-hole lead was the first of his career. Set tournament record with seven straight birdies (Nos. 9-15) on way to back-nine 29 and a career-best 10-under 61 (previous best was 64 three times). The 61 was one off the tournament record set by Grant Waite in 1996 and matched by two others. The back-nine 29 matched the tournament record set by Waite and Scott Verplank (1998)...Posted three rounds in the 60s to finish T4 at the BellSouth Classic. In second place through 36 holes after opening 69-65, posted rounds of 72-68 on the weekend to finish 14 strokes behind Phil Mickelson...Finished eighth on the U.S. Ryder Cup team list to make his first Ryder Cup team...Week of the announcement finished T10 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational...Finished T5 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Collected $198,000 and moved over the $2-million mark for the season for the first time in his six-year TOUR career.
