To guarantee every child with cancer the gift of a long and healthy life.
- Cancer is the #1 cause of death by disease in children, cutting short more young lives than any other disease...combined.
- Every school day, another 46 young people - about two classrooms of students - are diagnosed with cancer in this country.
- More than 40,000 children and adolescents currently are being treated for childhood cancers.
- One child out of 5 diagnosed with cancer dies, and another 3 out of 5 who survive will suffer from long-term side affects.
CureSearch supports the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the world's premier pediatric cancer research collaborative. The COG represents every pediatric cancer program in North America, treating more than 90 percent of children with cancer at more than 200 leading children's hospitals.
Since the founding of this event in 1989, the Shark Shootout has helped facilitate:
- The enrollment of 32,200 children with cancer into a clinical trial;
- The completion of 138 pediatric cancer clinical trials;
- The addition of more than 25,000 childhood cancer survivors - nearly 2,000,000 additional person-years of productive life;
- Improvements in cure rates for acute leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, brain tumors, and Wilms' tumor;
- An evolving focus of pediatric cancer research from increasing survival rates to improving quality of life for survivors.
Only research cures childhood cancer.
CureSearch celebrates the 22nd edition of The Shark Shootout and their ongoing commitment and support of our mission to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research.
